It was 95º last week. And here it is October. But I knew that it had been hot like this in the past. In 1953 on this date 70 years ago the high was 104º! I reminisced in my mind about this. Yes, while the world seems to be suffering from global warming, here in Oklahoma the weather does what it will. In 1953 I was 18 and as such often was available to help out on neighborly chores. Back then just as it is now, people were hoping summer was about done. But alas, this is Oklahoma.
Read moreI was watching TV last week and saw that the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority had decided to sort of back off doing much of anything for the time being. This was obviously a result of the “hornets’ nest” the authority stirred up with their proposed expansion of the Kickapoo.
Read moreThis is the week we celebrate Easter. It’s a time in which we think about getting back to church next Sunday. I remember clearly “Easter Sundays” over at Stonewall. It was a celebration and even a dress up time over in the First Baptist Church and a time for ladies’ hats. Yes, the women did wear their hats in the 40’s. At the Main Theatre in downtown Stonewall a popular sight on the silver screen right after Easter was the annual Easter Parade down 5th Avenue in New York City. That was presented by Warner Path-A News — a popular newsreel of those times.
Read moreSt Patrick’s Day was never a big deal in Stonewall. In fact, if it hadn’t been for those old Warner Path-A Newsreels at the Main Theatre I might not have even known there was one. Or maybe it was my sister Sue giving me a pinch on St Patrick’s Day because I didn’t have any green on my shirt that reminded me. There were no St. Patrick’s Day parades in Stonewall. Or even in the big city of Ada.
