On Saturday, February 6, 2021, at 6 p.m. the OHS Black Heritage Committee will present “Blacks on the Oklahoma Frontier: Lawmen, Outlaws, Cowboys, Cowgirls, and Rodeos,” the third Oklahoma African American Film Festival. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s festival will be held virtually. The focus of this year’s festival is African American pioneers on the Oklahoma frontier. Topics will include notorious outlaws such as Crawford Goldsby, better known as Cherokee Bill, and fearless lawmen like Deputy US Marshal Bass Reeves. Art Burton, author of numerous publications including Black, Red, and Deadly: Black and Indian Gunfighters of the Indian Territories and Black Gun, Silver Star: The Life and Legend of Frontier Marshal Bass Reeves, will be a special guest.

The Smithsonian Institution opened its newest museum, the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), on September 24, 2016. The celebration continues and reaches beyond Washington, DC, to Guthrie as the Oklahoma Territorial Museum and Carnegie Library presents A Place for All People: Introducing the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The commemorative poster exhibition will be on view from February 2 to May 31, 2021.

Funeral services for Jacob Israel Pack will be held today, Thursday, January 28, 2021 at 2:00 PM at the Assembly of God Church of Wetumka. Interment will follow at the Wetumka Cemetery.

Over the Christmas holidays long-time Norco, California residents Charles (Toby) Townsend and his wife of six-four years, Paula Sue Kennerly-Townsend passed away due to COVID related complications. Transplants from Norman, Oklahoma, Toby and Paula moved to Norco in 1971, along with their two children, Tara and Jay. Both Toby and Paula were elementary school teachers for twenty-eight years in the Corona/Norco Unified School District. Indeed, their positive, formative influence on the children they taught was immeasurable; they will, no doubt, be sorely missed. However, because their collective wish was to be cremated and to have their ashes spread on the grounds where they first met in Holdenville, Oklahoma back in 1954, there will be no formal service. They were survived by their two children, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Wanda Jean (Skaggs) McCarty, 91, longtime Seminole, Oklahoma resident, passed away from Covid-19 complications on January 15, 2021 in Seminole, Oklahoma. She was born on September 9, 1929, in Gerty, Oklahoma to Willie and Victoria (Jackson) Skaggs. Wanda grew up in Gerty, Oklahoma, and moved to Seminole in 1996.

Donald Earl Williams was born October 23, 1974 in Henryetta, Oklahoma to Gene Earl Williams and Norma Jean (Roberson) Williams and passed from this life January 22, 2021 at his home in Siloam Springs, Arkansas at the age of 46.
