Black History is Oklahoma History

A leader in the Oklahoma City, state, and national Civil Rights movement, James Edward Stewart worked very closely with Roscoe Dunjee, editor and publisher of the Black Dispatch, a weekly Oklahoma City newspaper. The son of Zena Thomas Stewart and Mary Magdeline Fegalee Stewart, James Edward was born on September 6, 1912, in Plano, Texas. He had one half-brother, Alfred, and two half-sisters, Ella, and Johnnie. The family moved to Oklahoma in 1916. Stewart’s father died in 1920, leaving James to assist in supporting the family. Stewart attended Orchard Park Elementary School and later Douglass High School. There he and noted author Ralph Ellison both played in the band and became close friends.

Sympathy Is Extended Mildred Owens Thornton family

Mildred was born near Okemah, Oklahoma in the community of Galilee on November 1, 1933. She left her earthly world on October 13, 2020. She was the daughter of the late Ray and Naomi Forshee Owens of Clearview and the wife of the late W. G. Thornton Sr. and the mother to Norma L. Roberts and the late Will G. Thornton Jr. Polly was the sister to Bonnie Cooper (Deceased) Irene Carson and Brothers: Clifford Owens Sr. (Deceased), Ray Owens Jr. (Deceased), Doug Owens Sr. (Deceased). Graveside services were held Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at Riverside Gardens Cemetery, 4720 N. E. 36 St., Oklahoma City, OK 73121 under direction of Temple and Sons Funeral Home of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
