Summit

Summit is a town in Muskogee County, originally called South Muskogee when it was platted in 1910, had a post office as early as 1896. The town is located six miles southwest of the city of Muskogee along the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas Railway. The railroad provided a depot for the community. The town’s name may have derived from the fact that it was platted 525 acres on the highest point of land along the railroad between the Arkansas and the North Canadian rivers.

Black History is Oklahoma History

The senseless deaths of George Floyd and so many other Black Americans, and the protests that occurred in response, have gripped Oklahomans, Americans, and the world alike. As an educational organization and a dedicated community partner, the Oklahoma Historical Society (OHS) has long believed that one important step toward ending racism and injustice is a better understanding of our shared history. By providing resources that give context for the Black experience in Oklahoma, we hope to spark civil discourse and open dialogue about the role of race in the history of our state. While these conversations about our past may not be comfortable, they are necessary to understand where we have been and how we can best move forward together.

The OHS Board of Directors recently elected its new officers—Dr. Deena Fisher of Woodward as president, Shirley Nero of Clearview as vice president, and Karen Keith of Tulsa as treasurer. Clearview News: Joyce Barrett has completed her cancer treatments and is now cancer free. She has returned home to Clearview after spending five weeks in OKC. Marguerite French has been having company all week from families of daughters Sherri, Michele, Margaret, Veola, Marion, and Jean Marie. Please continue to remember our elderly community and our friends and family on the sick list: Sharon Johnson Patton, Elder L. C. Carson, Cornell Lucas, Marjorie Plunkett, Marguerite French, Billy Walker and Christopher Stripling. Pray for our country and governments as we fight the virus, injustices, and economic condition. The virus is still alive, practice safe conditions.
