    Where, or when, did the practice of tipping for service come into being? The dictionary gives no explanation of this but does have a lot of definitions of tip. My history in the work place, drawing a salary, spans 64 years and at only one job did I receive tips.

    Fall! I’m glad fall finally got here. Although the temperatures aren’t quite right for a sweater just yet, at least we’ve been getting some rain and the evenings have cooled a bit. I grew up on a large farm and this is the time of year when the sorghum mill was going strong.

    In writing my column this week, a picture on display near the street at the Sonic drive-in kept popping into my mind. Every time I go by there I want to stop in and get a hot dog. Hot dogs have been around a long time. They come in many different ways. There are hot dogs with just mustard.

    Why do we celebrate the nation’s Independence Day with fireworks? I tried to do some research on this and all the information I came up with was about the flag and how the words to the National Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner, came to be written. Why fireworks to celebrate?

    This Sunday is Easter Sunday and as I write, I am thinking of the activities of the day. The Sunday School lesson, the Easter Lilies that fill the chancel at the church, the choir in their choir robes, and the music. This is a special day.

    I read a book recently about a caravan of gypsies. I have not thought about gypsies for many years, but when I was growing up, you could count on a band of them coming through the country every year. They told fortunes and sold cheap jewelry and trinkets.

    Betty White Recently I was watching the Emmys on television and they called out the name of Betty White and asked for her to come forward. I was living in California in the late 1940s when I saw my first television show. A neighbor bought the first television set that I ever saw.
