Service held for Joel Henry Freeman

Joel Henry Freeman passed away Sunday February 23rd, 2020 at his home in Lamar, Oklahoma at the age of 92.

Joel was born September 8th, 1927 in Lamar to David Houston Freeman and Sally Cordelia King Freeman. He graduated from Lamar High School in the Class of 1946. Joel married Iris “June” Carl on April 7, 1947 in Holdenville, Oklahoma.

He retired from Hughes County working as an equipment operator. He was the oldest member of the First Baptist Church in Lamar. Joel enjoyed ranching, cattle, horses, working his mules, fishing and gardening. He wouldn’t turn down a good argument and he loved spending time with family.

Joel is preceded in death by his parents; daughter Phyllis Jo Luna; brother Marvin Freeman; and sisters Marie Peterson, Ruby Looney, Lillian Robinson, Leola Milan, Gladys Farrell and Minnie Sweeney.

He is survived by his wife, June Freeman of the home; son Donnie Freeman and wife Gaylene of Lamar; grandson Brian Freeman and wife Shelly of Lamar; granddaughters Paulla Slawson and husband Ron of McAlester, Tina Cartwright and husband Tom of Lamar, and Jenifer Freeman Shockley and husband Brent of Lamar; great-grandchildren Tyler Slawson, Bailee Adams and husband Lane, Garrett Cartwright, Madison Slawson, and Blake Crawford. Joel is also survived by numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral service were 2:00 pm Wednesday, February 26 th , at First Baptist Church of Lamar with Pastor Jack Vance officiating, assisted by Pastor Mark Milligan and Pastor John Roberts. Interment followed at Lamar Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Brian Freeman, Blake Crawford, Garrett Cartwright, Tom Cartwright, Ron Slawson, Jay Gamble and Brent Shockley. Honorary pallbearers were John Freeman, Tom Farrell, Charles Gann, Tommy Joe Robinson, Jimmy Roberts, Bill McCoy, Ronnie Stapp and Dale Milam.

Services are under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home Holdenville, Oklahoma.
