Willie Bernadette Thornton-Cumby-Williams was born on December 20, 1928 in the small town of Clearview, Oklahoma in Okfuskee County to Willie and Mindy Thornton. She was the 10 th of then children; Lillian, alma, Selma, Etta, Irene, Ardell, Lovenia, Everett, and W. G.

Willie B. (Bay) accepted Christ at an early age. She was a member of Tryee Chapel A.M.E. Church in Clearview “Willie B. was united in marriage to Ulysses (Gus) Cumby in 1949. To this union two children were born, Dr. Dunn Cumby and Deveroyle Cumby. Willie and her children moved to Oklahoma City in 1959, where she attended Draughns Business School. She was the first African American 10 key operator of the Federal Reserve Bank.

Willie later married Reverend Alfred Williams. Reverend Williams pastored many A.M.E. Churches in Oklahoma. He pastored churches in Oklahoma City, Arcadia, Guthrie, Muskogee and Tulsa. The two of them made a dynamic team until he passed. No children were born to this union. Willie was a devoted wife and she had a special ministry of witnessing wherever they were assigned. She took great pride in inviting people to accept Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.

Later, she worked with her son, Dr. Dunn Cumby, when he started his dental practice in Oklahoma City and she also worked with Dale at the Farmers Market in her Art and Antique Shop on Saturdays. She was committed to the success of her children. She was deeply devoted to all of Dr. Cumby’s patients and employees, and immensely enjoyed interacting with the other merchants at the Farmers Market. She left great impact on everyone she encountered.

She enjoyed watching soap operas, reading her Bible, visiting, being active in the church, traveling, cooking, and entertaining. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her joy. She took great joy in her neighbors, friends, and other nieces and nephews. She lit up when they were around.

On March 18, 2020, the Lord called her home to be with Him in glory. Mrs. Williams leaves behind one son, Dr. Dunn (Magnolia) Cumby, and three daughters, Deveroyle (Dale Barbara Ann, and Susie; Gene, Peter, and Reverend Alfred Jr. (Linda) preceded her in death. Her legacy includes many grandchildren, great grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, friends, cousins, and other relatives whom she loved deeply and cherished greatly.

Asking for prayers for Christopher Stripling and Sharon Johnson Patton, Linwood Lambert, Otis Davis, and Cornell Lucas who are facing health problems. Also, continue your prayers for Marjorie Plunkett, Elder L. C. Carson, Marguerite French, Billy Walker, and Alpheus Grundy. Sending prayer for those who are suffering from the Coronavirus.
