    Threads of Life

    Where, or when, did the practice of tipping for service come into being? The dictionary gives no explanation of this but does have a lot of definitions of tip. My history in the work place, drawing a salary, spans 64 years and at only one job did I receive tips.

    Went to get the mail Monday but alas, the day was a holiday. Columbus Day. Or is it already changed to “Indigenous People’s Day”? Yeah, it seems old Chris, like a bunch of others has been demoted. Had the Nina, Pinto and Santa Maria made the trip in vain?

    By Brenda Brooks Tollett I inherited my mother’s hands. It was something I had not noticed until recently. Our hands are weathered by years of not wearing sunscreen when outdoors working in the garden, mowing the lawn or weeding the flower beds.

    City Traffic One thing that causes me happiness is that I don’t live in a large city. Sure, there are times I wish for some of the perks that come with urban living but all in all I’m used to the rural life and guess I’ll never change. All this to take my turn complaining about traffic.

    In 8+ decades of life, my hard head has managed to absorb some truths that my momma tried to tell me all the time I was growing up. Such as: I’ve learned: That the Lord didn’t do it all in one day. What makes me think I can? I’ve learned: That to ignore the facts does not change the facts.

    Fall! I’m glad fall finally got here. Although the temperatures aren’t quite right for a sweater just yet, at least we’ve been getting some rain and the evenings have cooled a bit. I grew up on a large farm and this is the time of year when the sorghum mill was going strong.

    Are we Midgets or Mustangs? A story made its way to me from Dr. Ron Bullard via his brother, Steve, last week. It is a long ago story about the Allen Mustang (oops, I mean Midgets) back in the fall of 1926.
